Pink Waves

Hi everyone! Today I have a nail art post for you finally! I'm sorry things have been a bit swatch centred recently, unfortunately that's all I've had time for recently and the schedules of collections just meant things worked out that way. I promise I'm going to have more nail art posts for you coming soon!

The mani I have to show you today was a bit random. I found myself with some time to do my nails and some nail art and wasn't sure what I wanted to do (isn't that always the way...when you finally have time, you're indecisive!). I remembered a mani I saw by Ophélie/Tartofraises in blue which was really simple but pretty and decided to do my own version.

I fancied doing it in shades of pink to change things up and make it my own so I started off with 2 coats of OPI Mod About You, which you probably all know is one of my absolute favourite pale pink polishes. I then used Pipe Dream Polish Take It Easy from the Mellowed Out Cremes collection to freehand some waves. I did the same with OPI Kiss Me On My Tulips and Colors By Llarowe Courage Brains Heart, this time using a brush instead of the brush from the polishes.

I then used some white acrylic paint to freehand some thinner lines to tidy everything up somewhat and add some 'detail' and then finished with some dots using a dotting tool on the areas where I didn't draw a line to separate the different polishes. As always I finished with topcoat.

I'm happy with how it turned out. It's funky and fun for Spring but was super simple! A good reminder that nail art doesn't have to be super complicated to look good and be fun to wear!

Alter Ego Fan Favourites Collection - Swatches & Review

Press Sample/Review

Hi everyone! Today I have the new collection from Alter Ego to show you. This is the Fan Favourites collection and as you might can guess, the colours and names were chosen by fans in the Alter Ego Facebook group!

She's a Brick House is a shimmery metallic berry. This is hands down my favourite from the collection. It is vampy and rich but not too dark and has a beautiful sparkle to it. I used 2 coats plus topcoat.

Spring Rain is a bright blue almost metallic which sparkles too. This one dries slightly dull and a little 'textured' like a glitter polish but smooths right out with topcoat. I used 2 coats plus topcoat.

Petal Perfect is a sheer purple loaded with blue/purple shimmer. I used 3 coats and topcoat. I could have gotten away with two probably. I also think this one would be fun layered over other colours. It kind of glows because the shimmer is so strong!

Summer Sunset is a pink jelly with golden shimmer and pink flecks. I used 3 coats and topcoat. This colour isn't the most flattering on my skin tone unfortunately but I do like the golden shimmer!

Morning Glory is a frosty lavender/pink. I have to admit that this isn't my favourite colour or finish but if you like frosts, this one is for you. There are some specks in this polish which seemed a little strange but they aren't too noticeable on the nail. You can see it a little on my ring finger. Brushstrokes are noticeable with this polish but perhaps you could avoid it by sponging on the last coat. I used 2 coats and topcoat.

Silver Lining is a metallic silver with black flecks that has a sort of speckled finish to it. This one is unique in my collection. I'm not a big fan of silver polishes but I like that this one has something different to it! I used 2 coats and topcoat.

The Fan Favourites collection is available now and each polish retails for $9.50. You can get 20% off your order with code The Mani Cafe

Alter Ego - Macarena AAAY! (Polish Pickup May 2018 - 1990's - Pop Culture)

Press Sample/Review

Hi everyone! I have the May Polish Pick Up Exclusive from Alter Ego for you today!

The Polish Pick Up theme for this month is '1990's'. Cynthia from Alter Ego has made a polish inspired by the Macarena. So so 90's! Here is Cynthia's explanation for her inspiration and polish : 'It was and still is a fun sounding song and it will still bring people to their feet if they hear it. Back when it was first introduced, I felt it was a way to bring people together, everyone of all ages and abilities would start dancing it together with no concern about it other than to have a few minutes of fun!  The color is from one of the dancers, she is wearing pastel pink satin hot pants and I put a blue shimmer in it to give a nod to all the blues some of the dancers were wearing too.'

Macarena AAAY! is a pastel pink satin with blue shimmer. The colour is kind of frosty and metallic. I'm not generally a fan of frosts but this one doesn't streak or leave visible brushstrokes which is really nice.

I used 2 coats of Macarena AAAY! and the formula was nice to work with. I finished with topcoat. I like how this is metallic but kind of pretty and girly too. It pulls between soft pink and a soft lavender/lilac because of the shimmer.

Macarena AAAY! will be available from May 4th at 11am EST until May 7th at 11:59pm EST along with polishes from other brands with the '90's Pop Culture' theme!

Rouge Louboutin

Hi everyone! Today I have an absolutely stunning polish to show you! I know I'm late to the party in the nail polish world with this one. I've admired it since it came out and some crazy amazing friends gave it to me recently as a gift for my 30th birthday! This is definitely an amazing gift and I love it! You'll see why I'm sure!

Rouge Louboutin is a red creme polish in the signature Louboutin red. The bottle is nothing less than fantastic and makes a beautiful display piece for polish addicts like myself! It now lives proudly on my shelf. It definitely doesn't fit in a Helmer with the rest!

I used two easy coats and finished with topcoat. The formula was excellent. The brush was nice and despite the unusual bottle and top, it was easy to apply and nice to hold. You get used to it quickly.

I loved it so much that when I had to take it off due to wear and a broken nail, I put it right back on again (after filing them all down because of the break). I decided to change it up a bit and add some white gold flake topcoat. I used one coat of OPI Pure 18k Gold & Silver Top Coat which is a limited edition released with the 2013 Mariah Carey Holiday collection. I figured why not add some more extravagance? If any base colour deserves a bit of gold, it's a red like this!

What do you think of it?

Sweet Heart Polish - Disney Glitter Collection - Swatches & Review

Press Sample/Review

Hi everyone! Today I have a new collection of glitter polishes from Sweet Heart Polish to share with you!

This collection is inspired by different aspects of Disneyland and will be added to the core Disney collection by the brand. If you're familiar with Sweet Heart Polish already, you might know that the creator, Cassandra, is a huge Disney fan! I'm a bit of a Disney fan too and it is a nice glimpse into Disneyland by an 'expert'!

Each polish is a clear base with different glitters so I chose to swatch over creme bases so nothing interferes with the glitters and flakes in the polishes. As for the colours I chose to use, I wanted to show you how I would wear these personally and picked out shades I thought went well with each. I hope you like the combinations but of course you could layer these over anything you wanted!

Native Night Blossom
'A mix of matte, metallic, and holo glitters in magenta, lime green and golden yellow. Native Night Blossom is inspired by the gorgeous drink of Pongu Pongu located in Pandora at Walt Disney World.'

I used one coat over a dusty pink creme (OPI Hawaiian Orchid) and topcoat. This is my favourite of the collection. I love the mix of colours and the holographic glitters. The glitters really seem to pop. I'm definitely going to wear this over a super soft nude very soon! So summery!

Millennial Pink Ears
'A mix of millennial pink glitters, cotton candy pink mouse ears and a sprinkle of micro rainbow glitters and purple to blue shifting micro flakes. Inspired by the newly released and adorable Minnie Park Ears.'

I used one coat over a light purple creme (OPI Planks a Lot) and topcoat. I by chance got a Mickey shaped glitter on my nail without fishing and there seem to be plenty in the bottle. I didn't have to dab or place too much to get a nice result. This is super soft and cute! I think my little girl will love it too with the shaped glitters! Sorry for the lack of sun when I swatched this one, lovely French weather...But you can see the iridescent glitters better in the shade at least!

Meet me at the Purple Wall
'A mix of matte, metallic, and holo lavender glitters with purple-blue shifting iridescent flakes. Inspired by the iconic, IG worthy, Purple Wall at Walt Disney World which just got a geometric upgrade!'

I used one coat over a white creme (OPI Alpine Snow) and topcoat. I like the tiny holographic glitters in this one and you know purple is my favourite!

Small World Wall
'A mix of baby, powder blue & soft white glitters with a dash of blue pearl flakes. Inspired by the iconic Small World Wall located in Disneyland, the perfect place for your next Disneyland IG photo shoot!'

I used one coat over a pale baby blue creme (OPI Suzi Without a Paddle) and topcoat. In real life the glitter stood out a lot more but my base is showing a tad more blue and bright than it really is. Sorry about that. However, the result is still pretty and delicate.

Violet Lemonade Vibes
'A mix of matte, metallic, and holo glitters in a soft yellow, bright pink, violet and sugar plum with violet holo mouse glitters. Violet Lemonade Vibes is inspired by gorgeous drink featured in the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival.'

I used one coat over a plum creme (OPI Casino Royale) and topcoat. I like the unexpected colour combination here. The pale yellow really stands out and the mouse glitters are fun!

Overall, this is a nice collection. The formulas were good for glitter polish and didn't require fishing or too much dabbing to apply.  They remind me of old-school indies with all the funky glitters and how I would lust after a polish and think what base colours I would wear it over!

This collection releases on April 30th at 9am PST and will be part of the core Disney collection, retailing for $9.50 each.
